The Influence of Advertising on Consumer Behaviour

Đề bài: Consumers are faced with increasing numbers of advertisements from competing companies. To what extent do you think consumers are influenced by advertisements?

Advertisements Strongly Influence Consumers Advertisements Have Limited Influence
  • Advertisements help consumers learn about new products and brands. They are especially useful when companies launch new technology or unfamiliar services.
  • Advertising can encourage impulsive purchases by creating fear of missing out, linking products to social status or making people feel that they need something unnecessary. This is common in fashion and cosmetics.
  • Children and teenagers are more easily influenced because they may lack critical thinking skills. Bright visuals, celebrity endorsements and popular characters can also put pressure on parents to buy certain products.
  • Repeated exposure makes a brand feel more familiar. When consumers are unsure which product to choose, they may prefer the name they recognise.
  • Many consumers now read reviews, compare prices and research products before buying. As a result, they are less likely to trust exaggerated advertising claims.
  • Price and quality often matter more than advertising. Buyers with limited budgets tend to be more careful, while long-term brand loyalty usually depends on product performance.
  • Constant exposure to advertisements can make people ignore or block them. Ad overload may also create annoyance and negative feelings towards a brand.
  • Loyal customers are difficult to persuade because their choices are based on real experience. A positive experience with a product is usually more powerful than an attractive advertisement.

Misleading Advertising and Consumer Protection

Đề bài: Consumers are faced with an increasing number of advertisements from competing companies. To what extent do you think consumers are influenced by advertisements? What measures can be taken to protect them?

Dạng bài: Two-part Question

Yêu cầu đề bài:

  • Câu hỏi 1: Đánh giá mức độ quảng cáo ảnh hưởng đến người tiêu dùng khi số lượng nội dung quảng bá ngày càng tăng.
  • Câu hỏi 2: Đề xuất các biện pháp bảo vệ người tiêu dùng trước quảng cáo gây hiểu lầm hoặc có tính thao túng.
  • Cần trả lời đầy đủ và cân bằng cả hai câu hỏi.
  • Hướng kết luận phù hợp: Quảng cáo có ảnh hưởng đáng kể, vì vậy cần kết hợp quy định pháp luật, giáo dục người tiêu dùng và trách nhiệm của doanh nghiệp.

Ý tưởng triển khai bài Advertising Writing task 2:

  • To What Extent Are Consumers Influenced by Advertisements?
High Level of Influence Moderate or Limited Influence
  • Advertisements can shape purchasing decisions by using persuasive language, emotional appeals and limited-time offers. These techniques often encourage impulse buying, especially when people shop online.
  • Vulnerable groups are often more easily influenced. Children may not recognise persuasive techniques, while older people may find digital advertising difficult to evaluate. Low-income consumers can also be attracted by unrealistic promises.
  • Advertisements can shape people’s preferences by presenting certain lifestyles, products and brands as desirable or necessary.
  • Many consumers research products before buying. They compare prices, read independent reviews and ask for recommendations instead of relying only on advertisements.
  • Advertising becomes less effective when people see too many ads. Some consumers ignore banners, distrust promotional claims or use ad-blocking tools.
  • Personal experience often has a stronger influence than advertising. Consumers may remain loyal to a brand because of product quality or recommendations from people they trust.
  • Measures to Protect Consumers
Government Regulations Education and Self-Protection
  • Governments should ban false or misleading claims, require accurate product information and impose fines on companies that break advertising rules. Independent authorities can also investigate complaints and enforce standards.
  • Advertising aimed at vulnerable groups should be restricted. This may include limiting children’s exposure to junk food ads and controlling promotions for alcohol, gambling and high-risk financial services.
  • Sponsored content and influencer partnerships should be clearly labelled. Companies should also present product risks, limitations and important terms in plain language.
  • Schools can teach media literacy and critical thinking so that students learn to recognise emotional appeals, exaggerated claims and other persuasive techniques.
  • Public awareness campaigns can explain consumer rights, encourage people to compare products and direct them to reliable reviews or consumer organisations.
  • Businesses should follow ethical advertising standards, provide transparent information and take responsibility for the claims they make.

Advertising Saturation and Consumer Fatigue

Đề bài: Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Advertising is highly effective at persuading consumers Advertising is so common that people ignore it
  • Advertisers use psychological techniques such as scarcity, social proof and emotional appeals to influence buying decisions. Celebrity endorsements can also make products seem more trustworthy.
  • Repetition helps people remember brands. Familiar slogans, jingles and repeated messages can keep a company in the consumer’s mind when they make a purchase.
  • Online advertising can target specific users based on their interests, searches and browsing behaviour. This allows companies to show relevant products at the right time.
  • Companies can reach consumers across websites, social media and mobile apps. Influencer marketing and native advertising also make promotional content feel more natural.
  • Advertising can create demand for products that people did not originally need. It can shape trends, influence lifestyles and encourage impulse purchases.
  • The large amount of money companies spend on advertising suggests that it remains commercially valuable. Successful campaigns often lead to stronger brand recognition and higher sales.
  • Consumers are exposed to so many advertisements that they often filter them out automatically. Banner blindness and information overload reduce the impact of many ads.
  • Many people actively avoid advertising by using ad blockers, skipping videos, paying for ad-free services or fast-forwarding through commercials.
  • Consumers have become more sceptical of advertising claims. They are more likely to notice exaggeration, manipulation and unrealistic promises.
  • Many buyers now trust customer reviews, independent comparisons and recommendations from friends more than traditional advertisements.
  • Intrusive advertisements such as pop-ups, autoplay videos and repeated interruptions can annoy consumers and damage their opinion of a brand.
  • Greater media awareness helps consumers recognise persuasive techniques. Many people now focus more on their actual needs and ignore irrelevant promotions.

Advertising to Children and Young People

Đề bài: Many people believe that advertisements aimed at children have a bad effect on children and their families. Do you agree or disagree?

Dạng bài: Agree or Disagree

  • Agree
Harmful effects on children Negative impact on families
  • Children often lack the critical thinking and media literacy needed to recognise persuasive messages. They may not clearly distinguish advertisements from entertainment and can be easily influenced by colourful visuals, characters and catchy slogans.
  • Advertisements for junk food, sugary drinks and fast food can encourage unhealthy eating habits from an early age. Promotions for video games and screen-based entertainment may also contribute to a less active lifestyle.
  • Advertising can teach children to associate happiness and success with material possessions. As a result, they may value what they own more than relationships, experiences or personal qualities.
  • Children who cannot afford popular products may feel left out or inferior to their peers. This can lead to social comparison, anxiety and lower self-esteem.
  • Advertising can create pester power, as children repeatedly ask their parents to buy promoted products. This may cause arguments, place pressure on parents and weaken parental authority.
  • Frequent requests for expensive toys, clothes and electronic devices can place financial pressure on families. This problem may be more serious for low-income households.
  • Commercial messages may conflict with the values parents want to teach, especially those related to health, education, spending and responsible consumption.
  • Parents may need to spend considerable time monitoring media use, refusing requests and explaining why certain products are unnecessary or unaffordable.
  • Disagree
Educational and informative value Reality and parental responsibility
  • Advertising can introduce children and parents to useful products such as books, learning apps, educational games and sports equipment. Some campaigns may also promote healthy habits or raise awareness of social issues.
  • Advertisements can be used as examples when teaching media literacy. Children can learn to question claims, recognise exaggeration and make more informed choices.
  • Some advertisements are creative, entertaining and memorable. They may introduce children to new ideas and encourage imagination.
  • Advertising is part of modern life, so children are likely to encounter it sooner or later. Teaching them to evaluate commercial messages may be more practical than trying to remove all exposure.
  • Parents remain the main influence on children’s behaviour. They can set limits, explain family values and decide which products are suitable or affordable.
  • Advertising revenue helps fund free television programmes, websites and educational content for children. Without it, families may need to pay for subscriptions or other services.

Advertising Competition and Brand Differentiation

Đề bài: Consumers are faced with increasing numbers of advertisements from competing companies. To what extent do you think consumers are influenced by advertisements?

Dạng bài: Agree or Disagree

Đề bài: Some companies sponsor sports as a way to advertise themselves. Some people think this is beneficial, while others believe it has disadvantages. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing task 2 Advertising

Phân tích đề bài:

  • Dạng bài: Discussion Essay
  • Keyword chủ chốt: companies sponsor sports, way to advertise themselves, beneficial vs. disadvantages, sports sponsorship, commercial influence on sports

Introduction:

Corporate sponsorship has become a common feature of modern sport, leading to debate about whether it brings more benefits than harm. While some people believe that sponsorship supports athletes and sporting events, others argue that it encourages excessive commercialisation. In my view, its advantages are greater, provided that clear regulations are in place.

Supporters of sponsorship point to its important financial role. Many teams, athletes and competitions depend on corporate funding to pay operating costs, improve training facilities and develop young talent. This support is especially valuable at grassroots level, where limited budgets can otherwise prevent promising athletes from progressing. Sponsorship also increases media coverage and public interest, helping less popular sports attract larger audiences. In addition, major sponsored events can create jobs, increase tourism revenue and benefit local businesses.

Nevertheless, corporate involvement can also create problems. Excessive commercialisation may weaken the traditional spirit of sport and allow sponsors to influence decisions for financial reasons. Another concern is the advertising of alcohol, sugary drinks and fast food during sporting events. Such promotion may send unhealthy messages to young fans, who often view athletes as role models. Furthermore, wealthy teams can secure much larger sponsorship deals than smaller clubs, widening financial inequality and reducing competitive balance.

In conclusion, corporate sponsorship may encourage unhealthy advertising and create unequal conditions between teams, but it remains an essential source of funding for sport. Rather than banning it, governments and sporting bodies should restrict the promotion of harmful products and prevent sponsors from interfering with sporting decisions. With effective regulation, sponsorship can support athletic development while preserving fairness and sporting values.
