Tóm tắt lý thuyết thì quá khứ đơn (Past Simple)
Thì quá khứ đơn được dùng để diễn tả những hành động hoặc sự việc đã xảy ra và kết thúc hoàn toàn trong quá khứ, không còn liên quan đến hiện tại.

Lưu ý cách chia động từ to be theo chủ ngữ:
- Was: I, He, She, It và danh từ số ít.
- Were: You, We, They và danh từ số nhiều.
Lưu ý về cách viết tắt:
- was not = wasn’t
- were not = weren’t
- did not = didn’t
Câu nghi vấn phủ định: có thể dùng dạng viết tắt “Wasn't he…?” hoặc “Didn't you…?” để thể hiện sự ngạc nhiên hoặc xác nhận lại thông tin.
Cách dùng
Để làm tốt bài tập thì quá khứ đơn, bạn không chỉ học thuộc công thức mà còn phải nắm rõ cách dùng của thì này. Dưới đây là các cách dùng thường gặp:
- Dùng để nói về một sự việc đã xảy ra và kết thúc hoàn toàn tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: They built this house in 2015. (Họ đã xây ngôi nhà này vào năm 2015.)
- Dùng để nói về những thói quen hoặc việc làm lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ nhưng hiện tại không còn nữa. Trong trường hợp này, bạn có thể dùng dạng động từ quá khứ (V2/ed) hoặc cấu trúc “used to + động từ” để diễn đạt.
Ví dụ: Every summer, my family went to the beach together. (Mỗi mùa hè, gia đình tôi đều cùng nhau đi biển.)
- Khi một hành động đang diễn ra thì có một hành động khác xảy ra xen vào, ta dùng quá khứ đơn cho hành động chen ngang. Hành động đang diễn ra thường dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn, còn hành động xen vào thường xảy ra đột ngột và ngắn hơn.
Ví dụ: The lights went out while we were having dinner. (Đèn bị tắt khi chúng tôi đang ăn tối.)
- Dùng để nói về một sự việc kéo dài trong một khoảng thời gian ở quá khứ nhưng đã chấm dứt hoàn toàn.
Ví dụ: She lived in London for ten years before moving to Paris. (Cô ấy đã sống ở Luân Đôn trong mười năm trước khi chuyển đến Paris.)
- Dùng khi kể lại một câu chuyện hoặc sự việc, trong đó các hành động xảy ra nối tiếp nhau theo trình tự thời gian. Mỗi hành động đều được diễn tả bằng quá khứ đơn để tạo mạch kể rõ ràng và logic.
Ví dụ: I finished my work, closed the laptop, and went to bed. (Tôi hoàn thành công việc, đóng máy tính và đi ngủ.)
Dấu hiệu nhận biết
Dưới đây là một số dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn thường gặp trong câu:
- Yesterday: Hôm qua
Ví dụ: Yesterday, I found an old photo of my grandparents. (Hôm qua, tôi đã tìm thấy một bức ảnh cũ của ông bà mình.)
- Last + [Thời gian]: … trước/ngoái
Ví dụ: My sister bought a new car last month. (Em gái tôi đã mua một chiếc xe mới vào tháng trước.)
- [Khoảng thời gian] + ago: Cách đây…
Ví dụ: The meeting ended ten minutes ago. (Cuộc họp đã kết thúc cách đây 10 phút.)
- In + [Năm/Tháng trong quá khứ]: Vào năm/tháng…
Ví dụ: They moved to this city in 2018. (Họ đã chuyển đến thành phố này vào năm 2018.)
- On + [Ngày cụ thể trong quá khứ]: Vào ngày…
Ví dụ: We had a big party on July 4th. (Chúng tôi đã có một bữa tiệc lớn vào ngày 4 tháng 7.)
- When I was… (Khi tôi còn là…): When I was a child, when I was young, when I was at university.
Ví dụ: When I was a student, I worked part-time at a bakery. (Khi còn là sinh viên, tôi đã làm thêm tại một tiệm bánh.)
- In the past: Trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: In the past, he worked very hard to support his family. (Trong quá khứ, ông ấy đã làm việc rất vất vả để nuôi gia đình.)
- Today / This morning: Nếu thời điểm nói đã bước sang buổi chiều hoặc tối và hành động đã kết thúc
Ví dụ: I drank three cups of coffee this morning. (Sáng nay tôi đã uống 3 tách cà phê – hiện tại đang là buổi chiều).
- Just now: Vừa mới xong (nhưng đã thuộc về quá khứ).
Ví dụ: I saw him in the hallway just now. (Tôi vừa thấy anh ấy ở hành lang xong.)
